Notes from meeting Sept. 29, 2009

We began talking about what we do in September. Library orientation, which includes patron catalog; sections of library; call numbers; using shelf markers; library rules. Sharon does 4 lessons on ABC order from mid-Oct - Thanksgiving.

We then started talking about all different ideas.

Nutmeg Books - We looked at the Spice it up wiki. It has a lot. If students wrote book reviews we could post it to the nutmeg wiki without names. Lisa said it was okay to have kids look at the wiki, but students can't post yet.

Online Bullying - a lesson plan is coming from the technology curriculum rewrite group.

Jean is presenting collaboration ideas at a teachers meeting at Washington.

Students' Autobiographies:
At Martin 3rd graders write their own autobiography and take their own photo with photobooth to add to it. Sharon suggested students write biographies of other students using interview questions.
Students learn the organization of the biography section at Martin by coming up with the title of their autobiography and then showing where it would be shelved in the biography section.

Flashcards - each library should have flashcards of library terms. Technology terms will be updated when curriculum finalized. Sharon - play bingo with them.

At Highland Park Sharon does a reading challenge with the 3rd graders. They have to read 70 Caldecott books throughout the year. She gives them a list with gold and silver titles that the library owns. She had 10 students last year read all 70.

Lisa had a worksheet for her reference section that she uses with the 5th grade. She will post it to the wiki.

Sharon suggested we work on using skype with each other for one of our meetings.

For future meetings:
Jeopardy PowerPoint
Parts of the book PowerPoint (Sharon pointed out that the one we've used in the past is down.)
Reference materials
Birthdays of Authors calendar
Using the wiki for communication

Here is my worksheet on using Reference Materials
